A new national poll from the Insurance Fairness Project, in partnership with Data for Progress, shows voters’ views on rising insurance costs, corporate accountability, and the role of oil and gas companies in the cost of living.
Voters across party lines strongly support pathways for legal recourse against insurance companies and support opportunities to hold oil and gas companies responsible for the financial harm they cause.
The poll also reveals that an overwhelming majority (84%) of voters, across party lines, support the right to file lawsuits against insurance companies that deny, delay, or underpay home insurance claims, with 82% supporting individuals' right to sue insurers that cancel coverage or raise prices without warning. These results indicate a growing, bipartisan desire for greater corporate accountability, stronger legal protections for consumers, and more action from policy leaders to address rising insurance costs.
Some key results from the poll:
84% of voters, across party lines, support one’s right to file lawsuits against insurance companies that deny, delay, or underpay home insurance claims, with 82% supporting individuals' right to sue insurers that cancel coverage or raise prices without warning.
77% support the state filing a civil lawsuit against oil and gas companies, or seeking compensation on behalf of the public, if an investigation finds they contributed to higher home insurance costs.
70% support a proposal in their state that would let individuals and insurers harmed by climate disasters and extreme weather recover their losses from oil and gas companies. That includes 81% of Democrats, 66% of Independents, and 64% of Republicans.
75% oppose legal immunity for oil and gas companies, which would protect companies from paying for climate disaster damages, with 53% strongly opposed. Only 20% support legal immunity.
49% say they are paying more for home or renters insurance than a year ago.
Nearly half (45%) of insurance policyholders say their insurance agent or company representative never discussed the provider’s ability to cancel the policy.
Nearly half (47%) of insurance policyholders say their insurance agent or company representative never discussed how much their premiums might increase after the term ends. Only 24% of voters said they received all the information they needed on this topic.
Just 4% of voters have a great deal of trust in companies themselves to act in consumers' interests.
"Voters have told us exactly what they want: insurers and corporate polluters held responsible for the costs they've pushed onto families, and real solutions to steady a volatile insurance market,” said TJ Helmstetter, a spokesperson for the Insurance Fairness Project. “That means stronger consumer protections, more transparency when people shop for coverage, and legal accountability when companies cause harm. This polling gives policymakers a clear mandate to act."
"As rising home insurance costs directly threaten housing affordability for the majority of Americans, voters are tired of their prices rising while insurance companies, energy providers, and the oil and gas industry go unchecked," said Grace Adcox, Senior Climate Strategist. "There is a strong appetite for holding corporations accountable, both for their role in driving up costs and their role in contributing to the climate crisis."
The poll comes as home insurance becomes a prominent issue in elections in Florida, California, Oklahoma, and Kansas. The poll surveyed 1,444 U.S. likely voters from September 15-21, 2026. It has a margin of error of +3 percentage points. Read the polling toplines and crosstabs from Data for Progress here.
